South Africa Mining Production & Sales Report

According to Miningweekly, statistics from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) show that the country's mining production decreased by 4% year-on-year in June, with platinum group metals as the biggest drag, down by 8.4% year-on-year, dragging down by 2.4 percentage points.

Coal production fell by 6.6%, dragging down 1.7 percentage points; Iron ore production fell by 10.2%, dragging down 1.5 percentage points.

Seasonally Adjusted Production

Seasonally adjusted mining production in June increased by 0.3% compared with that in May, but decreased by 5.2% in May and increased by 3% in April.

Seasonally adjusted mining production in the second quarter decreased by 2.7% compared with the first quarter.

The biggest drag was platinum group metals, down 6.4%, dragging down 1.8 percentage points.

The output of manganese ore decreased by 5.3% month-on-month, dragging down by 0.4 percentage points; Gold production fell by 3.2%, dragging down 0.3 percentage points.

Seasonally adjusted iron ore production decreased by 2% month-on-month, dragging down 0.3 percentage points.

Mineral Product Sales

At the same time, the sales of mineral products at current prices in June decreased by 27.2% year-on-year.

The biggest contribution is gold, with an increase of 125.7% and a contribution of 17.1 percentage points; Platinum group metals increased by 27%, contributing 7.3 percentage points; Chromite increased by 49%, contributing 3.7 percentage points.

However, iron ore sales fell by 16.1%, dragging down 1.7 percentage points; Other nonmetallic minerals decreased by 35.5%, dragging down 1.3 percentage points.

Seasonally Adjusted Sales

Stats SA added that seasonally adjusted sales in June increased by 2.7% compared with May. It decreased by 4.4% in May and increased by 3.1% in April.

Seasonally adjusted sales in the second quarter decreased by 1.6% compared with the first quarter.
